Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is making headlines again as he made a very controversial statement during his interview at The Breakfast Club.
Towards the end of the interview, he told the host Charlamagne “tha God” that, “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.” He also defended his stance on issues that affected the black community. Biden even claimed that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has endorsed him.
Needless to say, the statement drew a lot of criticism particularly from the Black community. Many progressives have slammed the former vice president for acting like he was the one who decides who is black and who is not. The NAACP released the statement regarding the incident and Biden’s claim that they have endorsed him.
Those were not the only problematic parts of the interview. Biden also made some claims regarding his role in getting the 1994 crime bill turned into law. That piece of legislation is now being blamed for the mass incarceration that followed, which affected the black community disproportionately.
The former vice president’s abysmal performance during the interview just highlights how prone he is when it comes to making gaffes. That latest blunder is likely to cost a significant number of black voters. That’s not the only gaffe that the vice president has been committing recently.
During a virtual town hall meeting that was conducted by his assistants, Biden seemingly forgot that he was on Livestream and he walked away from the camera. He has also made confrontations with people he met on the campaign trail and at one time he even called fat-shamed a voter.
As a kind of damage control, Biden apologized later on.“I’ve never, never, ever taken the African American community for granted,” Biden said and he added that he “shouldn’t have been such a wise guy.” But the damage has been done already.
