After greeting each other, the two leaders briefly crossed the North Korean border and repeated a handshake there, with Trump becoming the first serving US president to set foot in North Korea.

Surrounded by journalists, the leaders then went to the South Korean side where the two parties held talks.

Both Trump and Kim spoke highly of their meeting, with the North Korean leader calling it a sign of an “excellent” relationship.

The leaders’ meeting reportedly lasted almost an hour, after which Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in followed Kim Jong-un as he returned back to the North Korean side.

The US President had arrived in South Korea earlier the same day to hold talks with Moon.

Even though, according to his Twitter post, his DMZ visit was “long planned”, the meeting with the North Korean leader had not been announced and was unexpected.
